Te Tiriti o Waitangi Set - Free Digital Download

As we explore the historical depth of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, a significant truth comes to light — the duality between the two versions of the Treaty. The Māori chiefs, as protectors of their ancestral lands, signed the te reo Māori version of the Treaty, which held profound meaning in their cultural context. However, the English version, presented alongside it, contained subtle but impactful differences. These variations led many Māori chiefs to unknowingly agree to terms that diverged from their te reo Māori understanding.

This divergence in interpretation has echoed through time, influencing the ongoing discussions surrounding the Treaty and its consequences.

Our Te Tiriti o Waitangi Article Prints set aims to highlight this historical complexity by juxtaposing the te reo Māori and English versions side by side. These prints visually represent the differences between the two versions, encouraging reflection on the challenges faced by the Māori chiefs who, in good faith, signed a treaty that held different meanings in each language.

This exploration honours the resilience and cultural strength of the Māori people, acknowledging the complexities embedded in the Treaty of Waitangi. It calls for continued dialogue, understanding, and efforts to address historical injustices. These contrast prints serve as a visual catalyst, fostering awareness and contributing to the ongoing journey of reconciliation and mutual respect.
